Market continued to be very busy. This year, in particular, I saw interest for the established Brazilian artists. The supply of good works was very limited.
There were no “toquinhos” from Sergio Camargo. There was only one medium marble that was sold quickly.
Mira Schendell was also poorly supplied. From the golden works I saw only two good canvas. There were a few textures, but nothing exciting. And I did not see the beautiful paper works.
Raimundo Collares, Gibis, was also poorly offered. I saw a tiny one and a project one. But there was a great watercolor that find a final hand in minutes.
I believe that the supply of the established artists will be less and less and prices will continue to move up.
Regarding the living artists, Antonio Dias had a few great pieces, some of them at R$1mm mark. Arthur Luiz Piza most beautiful carpet was sold at the fair at an undisclosed amount.
In the contemporary side of the fair, there was a lot of action, but I believe the busy galleries were the most established ones in the international markets. I did not see a lot of great works available.
And the foreigners played an important role in the fair this year. Elvira Gonzales brought great pieces, White Cube showed its high profile portfolio but Casas Riegner had the best to offer.
Casas Riegner brought a simple and very conceptual set of works including Mateo Lopez, Bernardo Ortiz and Johanna Calle.
Pay attention to Sprovieri from Rio. They showed beautiful pieces.
My final reading is that the good artists were not well offered and people rushed to pick them up. The market is slowly decanting the good and the not so good.
